To make booking you trip easier we thought we'd give you the lowdown on our favourite spots. As a busy working family, we aim to get away once every 6 weeks for a long weekend ... or if we're lucky, a whole week away. When you're planning short get-aways you want to make it easy to hit the road and go. We live in such a beautiful part of the world, its fairly easy to find a stunning spot to escape to, right on our doorstep. Sometimes you just need a recommendation. So here goes.
Located on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, between Whangamata and Tairua, Opoutere is a hidden gem. The campground is nestled in a quiet spot, away from main roads, and is incredibly close to the beach. When choosing a camping spot, consider the meadow beside the river if you prefer non-powered sites. A short walk through the campground and a tall, pine forest will lead you to a breathtaking beach with panoramic views of Great Mercury Island. The shaded forest is perfect for the kids to explore during the heat of the day or for an evening bear hunt or bike ride. While the beach is great for swimming, it can be a bit wild for the little ones. However, just a stroll away is the estuary, offering a safer spot for splashing around. You can even take a paddleboard up and down the river in search of eels. The facilities at Opoutere are well-kept, and we've only ever had wonderful experiences here.
Just north of Leigh lies the incredible Pakiri Beach Holiday Park. This hidden gem offers a rural camping experience on a breathtaking east coast beach, just waiting for you to explore.
As you approach Pakiri Beach Holiday Park, the anticipation builds as you drive along a scenic gravel road. The campsite itself is thoughtfully designed, with spacious, flat, and grassy camping areas providing a comfortable setting for your getaway. A large bouncing pillow and small childrens playground kept our little ones entertained between meals and playing in the river and the golden sand beach. Additionally, for those seeking thrilling water activities, don't miss the opportunity to rent kayaks and explore the crystal-clear waters at your own pace.
Beyond the campsite, the surrounding area offers an array of activities to keep you entertained. Explore the nearby winery routes, embark on a scuba diving adventure at Goat Island, or take a glass-bottom boat tour. For the ultimate beachside experience, indulge in horse riding at Pakiri Beach or embark on the Te Araroa Walkway, a scenic trail that stretches from Cape Reinga to the Bluff.
